Latiao is a shared childhood memory for people in China born in the 1990s and 2000s. It comes from Pingjiang, Hunan, described as the birthplace of Chinese latiao. Made from wheat flour or soybean flour, it is puffed by extrusion and mixed with chili oil, Sichuan pepper, cumin, and other seasonings. Once a half-yuan snack sold outside school gates, latiao has moved into the premium snack category and is now one of the hometown treats most missed by Chinese communities overseas.
The classic pack contains 10 individually wrapped small packs made to a recipe from a long-established Pingjiang producer. The texture is chewy outside and soft inside, with a hint of sweetness beneath the spicy, tingling flavor—the kind of taste that makes one strip lead to another. A snack for the office, a companion for watching shows, or a taste of home while abroad.
